COVID-19 Impacts
We are all consumers. Not just because we stocked up on essentials to last us through our extended time at home, but because we are also spending more time online. All of the sudden we are also consuming more digital content. You are a consumer right at this very moment.
The pandemic we are facing has people turning to the digital world for more than just news. No commuting to and from work or class means more time engaging with content while being connected to people around the world through various social media platforms. Access to technology at our fingertips presents an opportunity for us to create and consume content like never before. Pictures, videos and memes can make us smile, laugh or cry in just a matter of moments. But do we have just a little bit longer now to perfect the desired ripple effect that industry leaders have been working at for years? How can we successfully target multiple generations, composed of people with different backgrounds, experiences and preferences? How will the times we are living in change the game for marketers and creatives?
As students shift from classrooms to computers as their learning environments, many individuals in the workforce seem to be adjusting to the work from home lifestyle as well. This sudden shift made me think about how this unfortunate reality is forcing us to navigate a new way of living. These structural changes will take lots of adjustment for schools and corporations alike, but I believe it will have positive long term effects. Individuals working and learning from home may have family members, roommates or pets as distractions, but this means another level of focus is required in order to prioritize and get things done.
Will online lectures mean that students will be more likely to watch the entirety of longer videos on their social feeds? Will people of all ages be better listeners? Could this mean more cooperative coworkers with a higher ability to recognize nonverbal communication skills? Will we develop a stronger ability to empathize with one another as we share different struggles which may be commonalities? Will digital meetings be more efficient and the new norm? What are the environmental impacts of connecting through a means of the digital world?
Let’s hope people are able to sleep more and therefore be more well-rested as we are all gifted at least a few extra minutes each day during this tough time. This may leave time and energy to be channeled to ideate and collaborate that might just lead to the next big thing. People have the opportunity to get active and finally start working towards their 2020 fitness goal they have been “committed to” for a few months now.
What if we had a little longer to tell a story? A second chance to make an impact? The opportunities are endless when it comes to making the most of the current times. How will influencers attempt to continue creating high quality content for their followers while being guided to stay inside? Will new artists get discovered? How will music be used to bring people together?
Time will tell. We’ll get through this together. But my final and most important question is how will you make your mark on this world for the better during this time?
